Maybe your image of jumping rope is of a beaded rope and a bunch of 12-year-olds tripping around PE class. We understand. We were also there. Nowadays, many kids use a digital jump rope, which wasn’t there during my times.
But if you haven’t picked up a jump rope in a while, or if you’re just scared of appearing stupid at the gym, here are a few examples of why it’s one of the greatest workouts around (and a lot cooler than you think). Let’s read the article before you look for “core abdominal trainer”.
#1 Calorie Cooker
Jump rope is one of the only workouts that burn calories. Jumping also at a slow pace burns 10 to 16 calories per minute. If you divide your jump rope workout into three 10-minute sessions, you’ll burn 480 calories in half an hour.
According to Science Daily, skipping rope for ten minutes is roughly equal to completing an eight-minute mile. There’s a reason the American Heart Association developed a jumping rope campaign (have you heard of Jump Rope for Heart?).
#2 Increase The Agility And Quickness
Will you want to be “lighter on your feet?” Every day, for a few minutes, skip rope. When you jump rope on the balls of your feet, your body and mind work together to create “neural muscle changes” that help you stay upright.
Skipping wire, in essence, increases your equilibrium and quickness/coordination by forcing your mind to stay on your foot for long periods, even though you aren’t aware of it. Boxers are well aware of this. Why do you believe jumping rope is a favourite workout for the world’s greatest fighters?
#3 It’s Beneficial to Your Mental Health
We also agree that exercising (even for only 20 minutes) is beneficial to the brain. However, did you realize that exercises that include both physical and mental effort (such as slacklining, ballroom dancing, or jumping rope) have a greater effect on cognitive processing than fitness tasks alone? (like the treadmill or stationary bike).
It turns out that the best brain exercises require teamwork, pacing, and technique. So, the next time you’re jumping rope, offer yourself a test and learn those jump rope tricks. They turn out to be very beneficial to your mental health.
#4 Cost-Effectiveness
Rope jumping is also one of the most cost-effective exercise choices available. Even runners must pay a premium for high-end footwear.
And what about jump ropes? And the most expensive jump rope costs just $25. Ropes that are quite basic (but effective) can be bought for as little as $3. A rope can also last you a long time, depending on the floor you land on.
#5 Lightweight
You can do rope jumping almost anywhere. We’ve seen people hop roping on the sand, atop cliffs, on warships, and sometimes in the dark. You can find space to jump rope unless you live in a hobbit hole.
Do you need to brush up on your jump rope skills? Jump roping is a simple ability that can be picked up quickly with a bit of practice. If you want to learn some advanced techniques, search on Youtube.
